Home Economics - Pasta

In Home Economics we made pasta. We worked in the same group as normal. To complete the dish we had to cut and saute onion, heat up a sauce, cook the pasta. The pasta could've turned out better as our spaghetti was sticky, indicating that the pasta had been over cooked. In the end, the pasta was alright and it tasted fine but I definitely think next time we could do better. I think our group could've worked better as sometimes people were just mucking around instead of helping. One thing I thought went well was when we were cleaning up as all the dishes were done and the benches were wiped down before the bell went. Unfortunately, the photos I took wouldn't send so I am unable to show you the finished product.

Home Economics - Japan

In home economics, we are learning about Japan. Something I have learnt about Japanese culture is that Tea Ceremonies are a symbol of respect and purity.  Compared to the majority of people in New Zealand, the Japanese take much longer to prepare food and put tones of effort into it. In Japan, it is common to have rice for every meal, whereas in New Zealand it isn't as common.

Another task we had to do in home ec was research rice, from this we now have to compose three questions someone else is able to answer. Here are my questions:

  1. Why is brown rice healthier than white rice?
  2. What colour is wild rice?
  3. Why is rice such common food?

Home Economics - Souvlaki

In Home Economics we made Souvlaki. As usual, I worked with Cortney, Tana and Gabe. I think our group did a good job of distributing the jobs out evenly as we all ended up with jobs we were able to complete and that went with our skills in the kitchen. My job was to prepare and cook the beef that went in the souvlaki. The thing I think our group struggled with was cleaning as for some reason no one was really in the mood to clean as well as we normally do. Next time we could clean as we went along to make it easier for us in the end. We got to put whatever we wanted out of the food we had prepared. In my souvlaki, I put beef, lettuce, tomatoes and greek yoghurt. I thought that our groups' souvlaki turned out pretty well and I liked that we were able to add our own things in our own souvlaki. Unfortunately, no one in our group remembered to take photos otherwise I would have shared what the souvlaki looked like.

Pizza - Home Economics

In home economics we made Pizza. I worked in the same group as usal (Gabe, Tana and Cortney). Our group worked well and we spread the jobs out evenly. The making of the pizza was pretty easy as we made a 3 ingrediant base and chopped up the meat and veges we need. The base was made out of yoghurt, self-raising flour and a dash of salt. We got to chose our own toppings top put on our own pizza. The toppings I chose was capsicum, ham, onions, mushroom and cheese. In the end I thought the pizza turned out good and they tasted good as well. Here are some pictures of before and after the pizza had been cooked:

Home Economics - Sushi

In Home Economics we made vegetarian sushi. I was in a group with Tana, Gabe and Cortney. I feel like our group worked pretty well together as we got everything completed in time. The actual making of the sushi was pretty easy as all we had to do was cut up some veggies. A struggle with making the sushi was that some of our group was left doing nothing as there weren't very many jobs to share around. Another struggle was making sure there wasn't any rice lying around after we completed the practical. I thought that the sushi tasted pretty good and I don't think I would do anything to change the end result. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to take any photos of us preparing and making the sushi as my phone died otherwise I would've posted one so here is a photo that looks similar to the ones we made:

Home Economics - Jam Drops

In Home Economics we made Jam Drops. I worked in a pair with Tana as there weren't enough people to have a group of four. Tana and I worked pretty well and we shared out our jobs evenly, for example, I washed dishes while Tana mixed the ingredients together. I feel that we worked well together and that our overall outcome was good. I thought that the jam drops turned out great and they were pretty yummy too. Some of our jam drops were given to the staff and they said that they enjoyed them and that they were tasty. Next time I feel like we could save more time or starting cleaning up earlier as when tidying up we were quite rushed. Overall I thought that the jam drops turned out well and that they were the right consistency. Below is a picture I found that looks quite similar to our cookies (I forgot to take a picture of our actual cookies).

Home Economics Spiced Apple Muffins

Yesterday in Home Economics we made Spiced Apple Muffins. The people I worked with were Rheanna and Tanaya. I think we worked well as a team and I was proud that our group didn't muck anything up and how well we were able to read the instructions on the recipe correctly. I think next time we could start working on presentation as they could be a little bit neater.

Chicken Stir-fry

Yesterday on the 20th of February in period 5 in Home Economics we made Chicken Stir-fry. In our Chicken Stir-fry we added chicken, carrots, broccoli and noodles. We used chicken because it was apart of the unit we are learning which is health and safety and we needed to know how to cook a chicken properly so we didn't get food poisoning (you can tell if a chicken is cooked properly if the outside of the chicken is brown and the inside is white). Yesterday I decided to work with Sharayah and Stacey to even the groups out more. The things that our group did really well with following the method and keeping to the time but next time we could work on our safety because we left the pan unattended at times.  I think that our Stir-fry turned out pretty good especially considering that I don't like noodles.

Today in Home Economics I made savory cases. In my savory cases I put in spaghetti, ham & cheese.
The students I cooked with were Rheanna,Kaela & Tanya. We were proud that we worked well as a group and of how well our savory cases turned out. Next time we will improve by having a bit more communication.

Here is what our savory cases turned out like:

2T of baked beans, corn or spaghetti

Cut crust of bread and butter one side

place butter side down of bread in a muffin tin ( may want to spray )
